Pilar Lecumberri-Sanchez is a mineral deposit geochemist with expertise on fluid-rock interaction, the 2022 Young Scientist Medalist for the Mineralogical Association of Canada, 2021 William Harvey Gross Awardee for the Geological Association of Canada, the 2019 GMPV Outstanding Early Career Scientist for the European Geosciences Union and the 2017 Waldemar Lindgren awardee from the Society of Economic Geologists. She has written and co-authored reviews on fluid geochemistry and fluid-rock interaction including two chapters in the Treatise on Geochemistry series.

Her research focuses on understanding (1) the global and regional distribution of critical metals, (2) the geochemical processes in the genesis of critical mineral deposits, (3) the mobility of elements and phase equilibrium in fluid-rock interaction, and (4) the distal expression of mineral deposits (vectoring potential). This has included studying mantle inputs in diverse tectonic settings and their relevance to mineralization potential, as well as the potential role of lithospheric mantle characteristics and processes in generating terrains fertile for critical metals.
