Writing and Learning Centre Appointments
To make the most of your appointment, come prepared with a specific question, assignment, or writing concern to work through with one of our friendly staff members. You are welcome to bring course syllabi, notes, textbooks, assignment sheets, or pages of a thesis chapter, and you can also attach documents when you book. When booking a writing appointment for feedback, we recommend that you upload your document 24 hours prior to your appointment so writing staff have adequate time to preview it.
To help us support as many students as possible, you can book up to two 30-minute appointment slots or one one-hour slot per week (up to 10 hours per semester). If you think you need additional support, please email us at wlcentre@ualberta.ca (additional slots based on circumstances and availability).
Writing appointments
A writing advisor or peer tutor can work with you to identify strengths and areas for improvement in your writing; use the feedback to help you revise and enhance your work. Although they won't focus on grammar and spelling, they will identify patterns when they see them. They also answer questions about responsible AI use in academic writing based on U of A guidelines and course materials.
Writing staff provide feedback on a wide range of documents, including:
- Course papers
- Thesis proposals
- Thesis chapters
- Conference papers
- Articles for publication
- Funding proposals
- Scholarship applications
- Statements of intent
Learning appointments
Meet one-on-one with a learning advisor to build learning strategies that play to your strengths and are in line with your goals. They also answer questions about responsible AI use in the context of study skills based on U of A guidelines and course materials. During the appointment, you and your advisor will focus on one of the following topics:
- Time management
- Reading strategies for textbooks, articles, and other texts
- Note-taking
- Exam prep
- Study skills
- Task analysis
- Critical thinking
- Oral presentations
