Undergraduate Research Initiative (get started in research)

The Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI) supports students’ academic and career development through engagement in hands-on research and creative activities. URI works with undergraduate students in any discipline, any year of study, and at any stage of the research process – from exploration to publication. Undergraduate research is a great way to gain practical experience, develop professional skills and connections, and expand your career options.

Service Offerings

• Undergraduate research advising, including support with finding research opportunities and connecting with potential supervisors

• Assistance navigating and accessing discipline-specific resources for undergraduate research

• Funding programs to support student involvement in undergraduate research

• Roadmap for Research: structured non-credit program to support first-time or prospective researchers in gaining the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate in research. Includes skill development seminars, hands-on activities and peer mentoring

• Opportunities for students to present or publish their undergraduate research

How to Access

There are three ways to request an appointment:
• Drop-in (room 2-701 Students' Union Building).
• Via campusBRIDGE, URI staff will send a Google calendar invite (with a Google Meet link if requested), typically within 24 hours.
• Via email: uri@ualberta.ca. Indicate your availability and whether you prefer an in-person (2-701 SUB) or virtual appointment.
Appointments are encouraged as drop-in capacity varies day-to-day.

Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Closed 12 - 1 p.m.

What to Expect

URI advisors have extensive experience and knowledge of undergraduate research across disciplines, and assist students in identifying and accessing research opportunities, funding, and resources relevant to your discipline/area of interest.
