Fitness Testing Services (FTS), operating within the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, provides premier, evidence-based physiological evaluations, performance testing, and expert consultations for all individuals. Designed to bridge academic excellence with practical application, FTS delivers assessments tailored to meet diverse health, sport, occupational, and research needs. The centre provides specialized testing for elite and recreational athletes looking to optimize their performance, individuals requiring occupational fitness screening, and researchers requiring data collection support. FTS is dedicated to fostering health, safety, wellbeing, nutrition, and overall wellness across both the university campus and the broader community. Whether you are looking to baseline your current fitness level, train for a specific athletic milestone, or fulfill employment safety requirements, FTS offers the state-of-the-art equipment and expert guidance necessary to help you safely and effectively reach your goals.
Service Offerings
- Resting metabolic rate (RMR) & body composition testing (for athletes, adults, and the general public)
- VO2max + body composition testing (for athletes, active individuals, and the general public)
- Advanced fitness assessment (for athletes and the general public)
- Athlete combine testing (mapping out team/club strength, power, endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility)
- Firefighter & occupational fitness assessments (physical aptitude evaluations for firefighter applicants, including U of A Structural Firefighting and demanding trades)
- Hydration & sweat testing (sodium concentration analysis and sweat rate tracking for athletes and endurance competitors)
- Research support (laboratory-based assessments, high-precision data collection, and data interpretation for U of A researchers and external institutes)

What to Expect
- Once you book your session, you will receive a confirmation email detailing how to prepare for it.
- Convenient public parking is available close to the facility at the Jubilee, Stadium, and Education parkades.
- During the assessment, certified consultants will guide you through every step of the appointment, paced to your unique comfort level and capabilities.
- After your test, the team will explain what your results mean in plain, actionable English, and give you clear insights to help you safely hit your health, safety, or training goals.
