GSA Senator: Call for Nominations

Opportunity to Serve: One (1) Graduate Student

DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS: Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 12:00 PM (noon)

“Nominations for Senator will open on or about April 1 of every year or on another date set by the GSA Nominating Committee in order to ensure that the position of Senator is continuously filled. The nomination period will normally be one (1) month” (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section D: GSA Officers, GSA Bylaw, GSA Officers, Council-Elected Officers, Section D.BYL.3.2.a).

The call for nominations for the position of GSA Senator will close Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 12:00 PM.

All nominations received will be circulated as submitted to GSA Council.

Duties of Senator:
The duties of the Senator are twofold:

  1. “All Council-Elected Officers (Section D: GSA Officers, GSA Bylaw, GSA Officers, Section D.BYL.3) as non-voting members of the [GSA Board].” (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section F: GSA Standing Committees, GSA Policy, GSA Standing Committees, Section F.POL.3.1.d)
  2. “The Senator acts as the GSA’s representative to the University of Alberta Senate” (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section D: GSA Officers, GSA Policy, GSA Officer Portfolios, Section D.POL.11.1.a).

 

Qualifications:
“The Senator should have prior experience acting as a representative for the GSA and/or as a liaison with bodies external to the University.” (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section D: GSA Officers, GSA Policy, GSA Officer Portfolios, Section D.POL.11.2.a)

 

Meetings:

The dates for the Senate meetings have not yet been set.  The Senate meets approximately every two months (4 times a year), with a Plenary Session starting on Thursday evenings from 4 pm – 8 pm and continuing on Friday mornings from 8 am – 12 pm.  Additionally, the GSA Senator may serve on up to three Senate committees. The Senator also attends GSA Council Meetings (the dates for which can be found here) and the GSA Board (meets weekly currently on Wednesday from 12 PM to 2 PM).

 

Election Process:
All nominations received will be circulated as submitted via email to GSA Council for an election during the May 15, 2017 meeting of GSA Council. Nominees will be invited to deliver brief remarks to GSA Council. If nominees are unable to attend and would like to address GSA Council, alternate arrangements can be made.

The GSA Nominating Committee may also actively seek nominations as allowed for by their Council-approved terms of reference (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section E: Nominating, GSA Policy, Nominating, Section E.POL.5.4).
