Established in 1959, the GSA has been representing and advocating for graduate students at the University of Alberta and in the broader post-secondary community.

Our focus on representation, advocacy for academically-employed graduate students, concern for the general welfare of students, and the intellectual, cultural, social and recreational activities guide our organization's every move.

Governance
The GSA is governed by our membership represented through the GSA Council, and our governing documents

Governing Documents:

Council
GSA Council meets monthly to review activities of the Executives and GSA Committees as well as discuss upcoming issues and business.
Each department is given representation through an elected or appointed Councillor (alternates are also allowed). Ten Councillors-at-large are also part of the GSA Council and are elected by the general membership.

Upcoming Council meetings:
July 14 2008
August 11 2008
September 8 2008
All meetings start at 6:00 PM and are held in Council Chambers (2-1 University Hall)

Committees
The GSA Executive Committee guides the day-to-day operations of the organization and act as the primary representatives of the GSA.

Supervisory Committees are given decision-making powers in various areas of the GSA. They work with the Executive and report to Council.

Advisory Committees provide guidance to the Executives and assist with duties within each of the Executives' portfolios.

The Judicial Committee exists to provide graduate students with an avenue of recourse regarding concerns about the performance of elected members of the GSA.

External Representation
The GSA provides representation of graduate students to various committees and councils at the University of Alberta. Most notably, the GSA is represented on the FGSR Council, General Faculties Council, Senate, Alumni Council and the Board of Governors.

The GSA is represented provincially by the Alberta Graduate Council.
